was glad to present our first spotlight which was our Artist Spotlight on Ron Guyatt!

Now I have a new section known as the "GirlHero Spotlight". This section is dedicated to lovely geeks I have come across that show a great passion for what they do and how they embrace their fandom.

I would like to present to you our first GirlHero Spotlight, Raechel Spinnie - Cosplayer

1. Tell me a little about yourself.

My name is Raechel, I'm 24 and I'm a cosmetologist. I'm from Eddyville, IL. I love to do hair, especially hair color and extensions. I recently graduated from cosmetology and looking to kick off my career once I find where I would like to work.

I’m a cosplayer, collector, and blogger.

2. What made you want to start cosplaying?

Back in 2007, I started watching Sailor Moon again. I saw some Sailor Moon cosplays online that really peeked my interest in it. I thought "Wow! I have to do that!" And so I did, several years later.

3. How long have you been cosplaying for?

I started buying materials and preparing in 2011. I officially cosplayed for the first time at MTAC 2012. That was one year ago. My one year cosplay anniversary is next weekend! I'm still a newbie to all of this.

4. What is your favorite cosplay you have done?

Hands down, Sailor Moon. She is my hero. Ever since I was a child, I wanted to be her. We have similar personalities. She stands for everything I believe in. I carry so many values with me from Sailor Moon. There's themes of love, friendship, strength, and standing up for what you believe in even when the world seems to be against you.

5. What are some of your best memories cosplaying?

One of my all time favorite memories is from MTAC 2012. I met Anza Ooyama, the first Sailor Moon actress from the Sailor Moon musicals. She is a huge inspiration to me, and one of my favorite actresses!

But honestly, the best part of all of this is that most of my close friends cosplay as well. Being with them in cosplay for an entire weekend is my favorite thing about conventions. I also enjoy meeting people with common interests.

6. Any new cosplay projects you are working on right now?

I'm working on finishing Mami Tomoe from Puella Magi Madoka Magica for MTAC 2013. My boyfriend is making my rifle and he painted my boots for me! My next big cosplay is Eternal Sailor Moon.

I also have a FULL Sailor Moon cosplay group/comedy troupe called Southern Senshi. There's 12 of us! Our very first appearance will be at MTAC 2013. We will hopefully have many more at other cons in the future! We don't have a page yet, but we will shortly after MTAC!

Here's a link to our very first event! - Mystery Science Sailor Scouts 3000 @ MTAC

7. Just for fun, do you ever wish you could really be a certain character you have cosplayed? Which one and why?

I would love to be a sailor senshi. Though if I had to really pick, it would be Sailor Moon or Sailor Mars. I would love to control fire. It's my favorite element.

8. What are some other hobbies you enjoy doing?

When I'm not cosplaying at a convention, you can find me behind a camera. I've dabbled in beginner photography. I love watching anime. I'm also a little bit obsessed with the paranormal. I'm a rollercoaster junkie. I love traveling, which is amazing because it's part of the convention life. I hope to branch out to other cons next year. But most of all I really enjoy kicking back with my friends and having a good laugh.

9. Any upcoming events we will be able to catch you at?

Middle Tennessee Anime Convention - March 29-31 - Nashville, TN

Anime Central - May 17-19 - Rosemont, IL (HUGE maybe)

OMGcon - June 14-16 - Paducah, KY

Fandomfest - July 26-28 - Louisville, KY

Anime Weekend Atlanta - September 26-28 - Atlanta, GA

Geek Media Expo - November 1-3 - Franklin, TN

Ohayocon - January 24-26 - Columbus, OH

10. Lastly, do you have any advice you would like to give for those starting out in cosplaying?

Everybody can cosplay. Age, height, weight, skin color, gender, and religion do not matter. We're all just geeks in costumes. Never look down on anybody. We should be helping each other up in stead of tearing each other down. Nobody likes an elitist.

Don't try to chase after "cosplay fame." Dedicate your time and resources to improving yourself. The more you try, the more people will notice you. Do something to make it your own. Always work on improving yourself!

Lastly, don't forget where you first started. My first costume was an absolute disaster, but it made me want to work harder and do something much better.
